Abstract
Since the financial crisis in 2008, policy interventions for financial consumer protection have emphasized consumers’ information asymmetry, low bargaining power, and bounded rationality. Among these interventions, the policy effort to improve financial literacy has been much strengthened and previous research suggests various institutional designs and policy infrastructure in order to improve financial literacy. Financial literacy can be decomposed into subjective and objective knowledge and in this study, we try to investigate the difference between subjective financial knowledge and objective financial knowledge through the lens of knowledge (mis)calibration. First, we show that knowledge miscalibration measured by the gap between subjective and objective knowledge exists. We further estimate how the degree of knowledge (mis)calibration affects investment expectations and outcomes of individuals. We use ‘2015 Fund Investors Survey’ from Korea Financial Investors Protection Foundation to analyze the status of financial consumers’ knowledge (mis)calibration and to present how this knowledge (mis)calibration associates with demographics, socioeconomics status, expected returns, realized returns, experience for financial education and consultation, etc. Our results show that most of financial consumers in Korea have been categorized into low-calibration group (where both subjective and objective knowledge on financial products are low) or under-confidence group (where subjective knowledge is lower than objective knowledge). Over-confidence group (where subjective knowledge is higher than objective knowledge) consists of only 7.7% of the sample but younger cohorts and higher income group are more likely to belong to over-confidence group. Moreover, over-confidence group has higher expected returns than the other knowledge calibration groups but its realized returns and investment satisfaction level are lower than high calibration group. Based on individual level analysis of financial consumers in Korea, we discuss the policy direction on information asymmetry, bargaining power, and bounded rationality among financial consumers, financial industry, and financial regulatory bodies while suggesting institutional implications for sustainable and transparent financial market.
