Abstract

This article analyzes Choi In-hun's Yeolhailki (1962) through the lens of historical research. It discusses it alongside Park Ji-won's Yeolhailki (1780) to illustrate its aesthetic achievements and the interplay of literary history and its chronological order. Yeolhailki was published immediately after the democratic fervor, which had reached its peak with the April 19 Revolution in 1960, cooled sharply with the May 16 coup d'état in 1961. It is a work that embodies in a complex form the literary concerns and methods of responding to social change. Despite its frequent mention about it over the past sixty years, this work has not been the subject of a dedicated academic paper. This article proceeded in three stages. First, as a preparatory step for interpretation and critique, I attempted to annotate the text's bibliography and content for the sake of historical research. Second, from a narrative perspective, I discussed the imitation methods of Yeolhailki and divided them into proper-imitation and reverse-imitation. Third, from a thematic perspective, I analyzed the shared social critiques and the differing satirical and mocking techniques and tones found in two works with the same name. The techniques of Choi In-hun's Yeolhailki are much more direct and explicit than those of Park Ji-won's Yeolhailki. The narrator recalls Rumourland, where political violence was mercilessly perpetrated, sinking into the sea and disappearing. This is an expression of intense anger that such things should never happen again, boldly declaring the end of political terrorism.
