Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate a structural relationships among ideal thin media exposure, body image, body-appearance self-conscious emotions, and eating behaviors among university students majoring in performing arts. A further aim was to test whether this structural relationships are invariant across dance and other performing arts students. Participants were 997 male and female university students(223 males, 774 females) majoring in dance, music, and drama/film. Results of SEM indicated that university performing arts students’ appearance concern and emotions(shame/guilt, authentic pride) partially mediated in the relationship between thin ideal media exposure and eating behaviors. Body management and emotions partially mediated in the relationship between thin ideal media exposure and eating behaviors. Multi-group analyses showed that the effects of thin ideal media exposure on eating behaviors via body image and body/appearance self-conscious emotions were not invariant for gender and majors. These findings suggest that university dance students should understand the values and importance of regular participations in classes rather than thin ideal body concerns. In conclusion, the results imply that university students could learn self-management skills, emotional regulation strategies, and effective coping for healthy eating.
