Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect whether mass media exposures on the ideal body image influence on eating restraints via the sociocultural attitude towards appearance. A sample of 353 university dance students (51 males, 302 females) was participated in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, internal consistency, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. The result of structural equation modeling indicated that a hypothesized model was fit to the data (=5.09. df=6, p=.532, Q=.848, TLI=.979, CFI=.986, RMSEA=.002). Traditional (TV, newspapers, radio, journals) and social (computer, mobile, SNS) mass media positively influenced on eating restraints via the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance. This result suggests that university dance students’internalization on an ideal body- appearance fully mediated the relationship between mass media exposure and eating restraints. Thus, findings imply that excessive exposure to thin ideal from mass media may negatively influence university dance students’eating behavior.
