Abstract

Based on the self-determination theory, the main purpose of this study was to test whether university dance students’ self- internalization of appearance impacts on the regulation of eating behavior through body and appearance-related emotions. Subjects were 427 university dance students (55 males, 372 females). Data were conducted using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation, and structural equation modelling. The results of structural equation modelling were follow as: First, Students’ internalization of low fat and thin appearance did not influence to the regulation of eating behaviors via body and appearance self-conscious emotions. Second, Students’ authentic pride towards their appearance mediated the relationship between the internalization of muscular and dancers-like appearance and the regulation of eating behaviors. Third, students’ internalization of muscular and dancers-like appearance influenced to the regulation of eating behaviors via senses of shame and guilt. These findings suggest that university dance students can regulate their eating behaviors when they highly values on the internalization of muscular and dancers-like appearance and perceive authentic pride towards their body and appearance.
