Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify an effective character building of approach 『The Golden Dragon』 by Roland Schimmelpfennig. It is a work that reveals the dark side of globalization and features the tragedy of modern civilization. Critical thinking by the Post-epic characteristic of this work encourages audience to recognize it vividly. In Korea, however, there has been a theoretical analysis of the script of 『The Golden Dragon』. but there has been no research on acting approaches centered on actual production. Therefore, this study attempts to identify the Post-epic characteristics that appear in 『The Golden Dragon』 and suggest a way to verify them through the actual production process focused on acting. For this purpose, I will analyze the post-epic features in 『The Golden Dragon』 from several aspects. They are, first, fragmentation of the fulfilled story, inducing critical reasons for the audience, second, emphasizing theatricality by simultaneously operating the audience's empathy and alienation, and third, sharing the framework of various acting paradigm with the audience through narrative structures with commentators, such as Brechtian epic dramas. Based on this analysis, Anne Bogart's Viewpoint acting training was incorporated into the process of character building and creating a role. Because of the performing elements and epic characters that appear in 『The Golden Dragon』 the body-centered acting methodology was more effective than the Stanislavskian acting approaches used in realistic plays. Ultimately, the purpose of this study is to find a way to play a Post-epic theatre as an actor who is an active subject that can physically make audience perceive.
