Abstract

Based on situated expectancy-value theory(Eccles et al., 1983) and mindset theory (Dweck, 2006), we investigated the moderated mediation effects of students’ experiences of expectancy for sucess and perceived cost in relationships between subjective values, growth mindset, and engagement in undergraduate dance students. A total of 368 students (65 males, 303 females) completed a set of questionnaires evaluating their expectancy-value, perceived cost, growth mindset, and class engagement. Descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation, and moderated regression analysis using PROCESS program for SPSS were conducted. The results of simple regression analysis revealed a mediating role of growth mindset in the relation between university dance students’ sub- jective value perceptions and class engagement. Second, the students’ perceived cost had a moderat- ing effect on the mediating effect of the growth mindset between the subjective value and class engagement. In conclusion, these findings suggest that enhancing students’ values beliefs of academ- ics and perceiving its costs in dance classes may encourage their growth mindset and engagement in dance class.
