Abstract
This study examines the changes and issues of creative agency in new media theatre that have emerged with the development of digital technology. The emergence of new media technologies has changed the hierarchy in the traditional theatre creative structure where humans, especially writers, actors, and directors, have long occupied central positions. Technologies such as AI, VR, algorithms, and motion capture have made it possible for machines, or non-human actors, to participate in the creative process, which in turn has led to a diversification of creative actors. Unlike in the past when only humans were the creative agents, in new media theatre, the creative agents are expanding in the form of technology-human complexes, which can only be analysed through transhuman and posthu- man discourses. Based on Ray Kurzweil's transhuman and Catherine Hayles's posthuman theories, this paper exam- ines the technological expansion of the human body and cognition, and the interaction between hu- mans and non-humans, using BBRUN and PAPHOS 2.0 as performance cases. Then, ethical issues such as copyright and privacy in contemporary new media theatre were discussed. As a result, this study sought to explore the possibility of reconstructing creative agency and ethical practice beyond the anthropocentric art paradigm in new media theatre, rather than simply the formal aspects of technological change.
