Abstract

This study aims to explore the meaning and direction of school dance education based on em bodied cognition theory. In Korea, school dance education has long been situated within the ex pressive activities domain of physical education, which has limited recognition of its characteristics as arts education and its cognitive and affective learning values. To address this issue, this study em ployed a literature review method to analyze key concepts of embodied cognition theory and previous studies on school dance education, and to reinterpret the educational meaning of school dance edu cation from an embodied cognition perspective. The findings indicate that school dance education functions as a site of embodied cognition in which concepts and meanings are constructed through bodily experience, as well as a learning environment where cognitive processes are distributed and extended through interaction with the environment, tools, and others. Furthermore, it was interpreted as an educational experience characterized by emergent learning structures grounded in sensation and affect, enabling the reconfiguration of relationships among the self, others, and the world. Based on these analyses, this study proposes directions for school dance education that include sensory- and body-centered instructional design, learning structures integrating interaction, process-oriented assessment reflecting emergence and diversity, and the creation of learning environments that support students’ emotional and social development. By reconceptualizing school dance education as em bodied arts-based learning through the lens of embodied cognition, this study provides foundational implications for expanding both theoretical discussions and educational practices in school dance education.
