Abstract
This study aims to analyze how social conflicts relate to party politics in a society as a case of ethnic conflicts in Northern Ireland. It came from 17th centuries. The confrontations between two different ethnic identities' group have been long lasted with divisions of residential districts and differences of educational systems. However, it has been changed with close relationships to party politics. Its changes started late in the 1980's before the 1998 British-Irish Peace Agreement. At that time, the Catholic parties were formed and expanded their influences. It led insoluble ethnic conflicts to a matter that settles peacefully in change of party politics as a multi-party system. However, it has a paradox. Changes of party politics turn the bloodletting conflicts into peaceful agreement, but life-span of parties depend on the ethnic conflicts. Put differently, parties are able to survive with mobilization of social conflicts. Therefore, we found that party politics reproduce ethnic conflicts with existing social institutions through a case of Northern Ireland.
