북아일랜드는 이른바 분쟁(Troubles)으로 불리우는 정치적 폭력을 경험한 사회이며, 그 유산은 사회의 각 부문에 지속적으로 영향을 주어 왔다. 그러나 북아일랜드 사회의 구성원들, 특히 시민사회에서는 자라나는 세대들이 보다 긍정적으로 다양성을 인정하고 화해를 도모할 수 있는 학교 체계를 모색하려고 노력하였다. 그 결과는 통합학교의 설립과 확대로 나타났다. 아울러 상호이해와 화해를 지향해 온 북아일랜드 교육은 최근 공유교육을 추진하고 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 북아일랜드 사례가 우리의 통일교육에 주는 의미가 어떤 것인지를 고찰하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 첫째, 분쟁이후 사회에서 교육의 역할에 대해 살펴보고, 둘째, 북아일랜드의 평화프로세스의 일환으로서 통합교육과 공유교육의 성과와 한계를 살펴보며, 셋째, 이러한 북아일랜드의 교육적 노력이 우리의 통일교육에 주는 함의를 살펴보고자 하였다.
Abstract
Northern Ireland is a society that has experienced political violence, so-called "Troubles", and its heritage has continued to influence each sector of society. However, members of Northern Ireland society, particularly civil society, sought to find a school system in which growing generations could recognize more positively at diversity and promote reconciliation. The result was the establishment and expansion of integrated schools. In addition, Northern Ireland education, which has been aimed at mutual understanding and reconciliation, has recently been promoting shared education. The purpose of this study is to examine the implications of this Northern Ireland case for our unification education. To this end, this study first looked at the role of education in post-conflict society. Secondly, the achievements and limitations of integrated and shared education were considered as part of the Northern Ireland peace process. Finally, I wanted to look at the implications of these educational efforts in Northern Ireland for our unification education.
