토픽 모델링을 활용한 염불 분야 학술 담론 분석

본 연구는 디지털 인문학의 텍스트 마이닝 기법인 토픽 모델링을 활용하여 한국 불교 염불 분야 학술 담론의 구조와 변천 양상을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 연구 대상은 2005년부터 2025년 4월까지 KCI 등재 및 등재 후보지에 발표된 염불 관련 학술논문 229편으로 설정하였다. 수집된 데이터에 대해 TF-IDF 기반의 전처리와 LDA 알고리즘을 적용하여 총 8 개의 주요 토픽을 도출하였다. 도출된 토픽은 염불 수행의 과정과 방법론, 염불의 음악적 구조와 장단의 특성, 정토사상과 염불의 교학적전개, 염송문학의 서사 구조와 언어학적 특성, 왕생 염원과 아미타불신앙의 의례적 실천 양상, 염불 수행의 역사적 변천과 지역별 특수성, 불교 의례로서의 염불의 위치와 그 음악적 특징, 선종에서의 염불 수행과 염불선 사상 등으로 구분되었다. 본 연구는 기존 연구들의 문헌 고찰, 선행 지식, 주관적 해석에 의존했던 방법론적 한계를 보완하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 정성적 접근의객관성과 일반화 한계를 극복할 수 있는 새로운 분석 방법을 도입하였다. 데이터 기반 정량 분석을 통해 염불 담론의 객관적 구조와 시계열적 발전 양상을 실증적으로 규명하였다. 이러한 연구 결과는 향후 염불 연구의 디지털화, 데이터 기반 융합 분석, 학제 간 융합 연구의 방향성을 제시하는 중요한 기초 자료가 될 것이다.
Abstract
This study employed topic modelling, a text mining technique within digital humanities, to conduct an in-depth analysis of the structure and evolving patterns within the academic discourse on Buddhist chanting in Korea. The research subjects comprised 229 academic papers on chan ting published in KCI-listed and candidate journals from 2005 to April 2025. TF-IDF-based preprocessing and the LDA algorithm were applied to the collected data, yielding eight major topics. These topics encompassed the process and methodology of chan ting practice, the musical structure and rhythmic characteristics of chanting, the doctrinal development of Pure Land thought and chanting, the narrative structure and linguistic features of chanting literature, the ritual practices of rebirth aspirations and Amitābha Buddha devotion, the historical evolution and regional particularities of chanting practice, the position of chanting as a Buddhist ritual and its musical characteristics, and chanting practice and the concept of “chanting meditation” within the Zen tradition. This study sought to address the methodological limitations of previous research, which relied heavily on literature reviews, prior knowledge, and subjective interpretations. To this end, a novel analytical approach was introduced to overcome the objectivity and generalisability constraints inherent in qualitative methodolo gies. Through data-based quantitative analysis, the objective structure and temporal developmental patterns of chanting discourse were empirically elucidated. These findings will serve as crucial foundational material, pointing the way towards the digitisation of chanting research, data-based convergent analysis, and interdisciplinary collaborative studies in the future.
