Abstract

This study analyzes the narrative and symbolic correlation between the mythological crow “Yatagarasu (八咫烏 / 頭八咫烏)” recorded in Japan’s classical texts and the “Kasugaigarasu (鎹鴉)” appearing in the modern animation Kimetsu no Yaiba(Demon Slayer). The purpose of this study is to examine how the symbolic meaning of the crow in ancient mythology has been reproduced and transformed in contemporary narratives. In particular, attention is paid to how the crow, described in classical sources as a divine messenger conveying the will of the gods, is reinterpreted as a narrative motif within modern popular culture. The study first analyzes passages concerning Yatagarasu in the Kojiki (古事記) and the Nihon Shoki (日本書紀), confirming that Yatagarasu functioned not only as a guide during Emperor Jinmu’s (神武天皇) eastern expedition but also as a divine emissary delivering the commands of heaven. The crow’s verbal communication and guiding acts served as narrative turning points that determined the course of events, symbolizing a being that connects heaven and the human world. Furthermore, an analysis of the fourteen Kasugaigarasu in Kimetsu no Yaiba (thirteen crows and one sparrow) revealed that these birds act as messengers assigned to each member of the Demon Slayer Corps, transmitting orders from headquarters, reporting battle situations, and communicating in human language. This narrative structure directly parallels that of the Yatagarasu tradition—“verbal transmission of divine command – report – submission”—as depicted in the classical texts. The significance of this study lies in identifying the Kasugaigarasu in Kimetsu no Yaiba not merely as animal characters but as modern reinterpretations of the mythic motif of the divine messenger. Just as Yatagarasu was associated with the sun deity and the three-legged crow (三足烏) tradition, symbolizing the mediator of the heavenly will, the Kasugaigarasu can likewise be understood as symbolic agents transmitting divine intent. This demonstrates that the narrative structures and symbolic systems of Japan’s ancient mythology continue to be transformed and inherited within contemporary Japanese media narratives.
