Abstract

This study applies Christopher Vogler's "12 Steps of the Hero's Journey" as a framework for analyzing martial arts narratives, and integrates the four elements of "gi(奇), jeong(情), mu(武), and hyeop(俠)" that constitute the identity of martial arts into it to structurally understand the narrative changes of the protagonists of Korean martial arts comics. The subjects of analysis were selected as representative works symbolizing the transitions of the times and media. By comparing and analyzing Lee Jae-hak's Geomsin Geomgwi from the 1980s script era, Moon Jeong-hu's Yongbi Bulpae from the 1990s magazine era, and LICO's Hwasan Gwihwan from the webtoon era, the common structures and changing patterns shared by martial arts heroes from each era were identified. The research results confirmed a significant shift from the "revenge-focused individual hero" of the 1980s, to the "cooperative and cheerful hero" of the 1990s, to the "regressive and growth-oriented hero" of the webtoon era. Furthermore, the study revealed that platform characteristics—continuous consumption of scripted news, the character-centered structure of magazine comics, and the rapid development and compressed cliffhanger format of webtoons—directly influenced the hero's growth stages and the way in which the "spirit, emotion, martial arts, and hype" elements were implemented. This study is the first to systematically compare the narrative structure of Korean martial arts comics across eras and media. Its significance lies in its structural interpretation of the genre's unique grammar and internal logic, applied to modern narrative models. Furthermore, it will serve as a foundational resource for martial arts comics research and provide a crucial theoretical foundation for future research on martial arts webtoons and the genre.
