Abstract

Questioning is an excellent teaching device, thus, it is important for teachers to practice questions properly. This study focuses on how to enhance students’ ability in geography thinking through effective questioning methods. To this end, two different approaches, theoretical research as well as surveys to geography teachers, were taken and propose novel questioning strategies. This study found that high-order cognitive questioning and open questioning categories proposed by Brown and Blosser, respectively, are most effective as questioning categories. In addition, surveys revealed that geography teachers are not familiarized with questioning approaches: they are simply practicing low-order questioning, however, they also understand the importance of questioning in effective teaching. This study also proposes three-steps toward increased geography thinking, and emphasizes that questioning strategies based on fact-centered teaching serves as starting point in the thought-centered teaching. Future studies includes an implementation of evaluation methods and subsequent validation of the implementation.
