Abstract
Throughout this paper, the impacts of the enlarged EU on the third country have been examined, especially focused on Korean industry. Several features deserve attention. Firstly, the EU enlargement has a small negative impact on Korea's welfare that means implicitly there would be more trade diversion effect in the enlarged EU than trade creation effect. Secondly, when it comes to higher tariff protection for certain products in the new member states, the third country can present substantiate claims for compensation. In this case, highly useful insights are provided in the Turkey- Textiles case where the purpose of a customs union is mentioned, “to facilitate trade” between the constituent members and “not to raise barriers to the trade” with third countries, “a balance must be struck by the constituent members of a custom union.” Thirdly, our results show that motor vehicle and metal and steel industry would experience the decrease in their production. Thus, it will be beneficial for these industries to expand direct investment in the CEECs or to make the most of the existing production bases where the production of these industries is likely to increase.
