근대기 한국 도자기의 예술적 인식변화에 관한 연구: 영국 빅토리아앤앨버트 박물관 ‘르 블론드 컬렉션’을 중심으로

본 연구는 20세기 전반, 서구사회에서 한국유물에 대한 수집 방식이 좀 더 세분화되고, 전시를 통해 대중에게 제시되면서 한국에 대한 지식, 관념, 인식이 한국문화로서 표상되는 방식을 주목하였다. 특히, 서구 문화기관에서 다양한 방식으로 수집, 배치되었던 한국유물이 보다 지속적이고 항구적인 시각체계로 수렴되는 지점을 설명하고자, 영국 빅토리아앤앨버트 박물관(Victoria and Albert Museum)에 예술적맥락으로 수렴된 컬렉터 오브리 르 블론드(Aubrey Le Blond, 1869-1951)의 한국 도자기 컬렉션을 중심으로 논의하였다. 본 연구는 근대기 한정된 기초자료의 한계를 보완하고 서구사회에서 한국문화가 제시된 다양한 측면을 보여주는 아카이브 자료를 연구대상에 포함시켜, 보다 실증적이고 구체적인 논의를 시도하였다. 아카이브 자료는 한국문화가 수집, 분류되어 문화적으로 표상되는 맥락을 밝히는 데 유용하며, 실증자료를 통해 문화형성 과정의 특수성이 부감될 수 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서 집중한 영국에서 한국 도자기가 예술적으로 인식되는 변화를 영국의 빅토리아앤알버트 박물관의 초기 한국문화 컬렉션인 ‘르 블론드 컬렉션(the Le Blond Collection)’을 중심으로 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study focused on the way in which the collection of Korean artifacts in Western society was further subdivided and presented to the public through exhibitions, whereby knowledge, ideas and perceptions of Korea were represented as Korean culture in the first half of the 20th century. In order to explain the point where Korean artifacts collected and arranged in various ways by Western cultural institutions converge into a more persistent and permanent visual system, the Korean ceramic collection converged in artistic context at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK was demonstrated as the main case. In this study, I tried to make more empirical and concrete discussions by supplementing the limitations of basic modern Korean art materials through including archived data showing various aspects of Korean culture presented in Western society. Archive data is useful for revealing the context in which Korean culture is collected and classified and culturally represented, and by reviewing the empirical data, the peculiarity of the cultural formation process can be vividly seen. Through this, the focus of this study was to discuss the changes in Korean ceramic art artistically recognized in England, focusing on the Le Blond Collection, an early collection of Korean culture at the Victoria and Albert Museum in UK.
