세브르국립도자박물관(Musée National de Céramique de Sèvres) 아카이브 소장 문서를 통해 본 근대기 한국 도자의 유입과정과 조력실태 : 빅토르 콜랭 드 플랑시컬렉션을 중심으로

초록

본 논문은 근대 초기 세브르국립도자박물의 한국 도자 컬렉션의 형성과정과 그 과정에서 단초역할을 했던 프랑스 문화정책 및 조력 인물을 추적하고 이후 한국실 설치와 운영의 의미를 조망하는 데 연구 목적을 두었다. 특히 1887년 조선에서 공사로 재임했던 빅토르 콜랭 드 플랑시가 한국 도자의 최대 기증자인 점에 주목하여 현재 박물관 아카이브에 소장된 그의 문서들을 기반으로 한국 도자들이 유입된 경로와 경위를 파악했다. 당시 그는 한국 도자원류에 대한 연구가 제대로 진행되지 못했고 이들을 시대별로 온전하게 감식할 수 있는 여건이 형성되지 못한 상황에서 수집과 도요지 발굴조사를 병행하여 연대기를 측정하는 데 총력을 기울였다. 또한 그를 조력했던 국내외 인사들께 협조를 구해 한국 도자의 역사와 위상에 대한 올바른 인식을 창출시키기 위해 유도하였다. 이러한 일련의 단계를 거치면서 한국 도자의 소장 규모는 비대해졌고 안전하게 프랑스 본국에 수송된 이후 한국 도자의 정체성 구현을 위해 프랑스 내 여러 기관으로 분산 기증되기를 희망했다. 그럼에도 플랑시공사는 한국 도자 기증처 일순위에 세브르박물관을 지목했고, 이 박물관은 그의 협력에 힘입어 한국실 설치를 진행했다. 박물관 내부에 중국, 일본에 이어 한국실이 설치된 것은 그의 수집의 역사와 개인적인 연구 진행, 스스로의 궁금증 등이 결합된 성과였지만, 결과적으로는 근대 프랑스에 한국 도자를 알린 진정한 개척자임을 확인시켜 주는 계기였다.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the formation process of the Korean ceramics collection of the Sèvres National Ceramic Museum in the early modern period, the French cultural policy and supporting figures who played a starting role in the process, and to survey the meaning of the installation and operation of the Korean gallery afterwards. In particular, paying attention to the fact that Victor Collin de Plancy, who served as minister in Joseon in 1887, was the largest donor of Korean ceramics, and based on his documents currently stored in the museum archives, the route and details of the introduction of Korean ceramics by period were identified. At that time, he devoted all his energy to measuring the chronology by conducting an excavation of a kiln site in a situation where research on Korean ceramics was not properly conducted and conditions were not formed to fully identify them by era. He also sought the cooperation of domestic and foreign figures who assisted him, and induced them to create a correct perception of the history and status of Korean ceramics. Through these series of steps, the size of the collection of Korean ceramics grew, and after the lawsuit was safely filed in France, it was hoped that the ceramics would be distributed and donated to various institutions in France to realize the identity of Korean ceramics. Nevertheless, the Plancy pointed out the Musée Sèvres as the first place to donate Korean ceramics, and the museum proceeded with the installation of the Korean gallery thanks to his cooperation. The installation of the Korean gallery following China and Japan in the museum was the result of a combination of his collection history, personal research, and his own curiosity, in the end, it was an opportunity to confirm that he was a true pioneer who introduced Korean ceramics to modern France.
