Abstract
In this paper, I explain Stahl's concept of ‘organism’ and his philosophy of life. He was the one who played the most important role in the emergence and establishment of the concept of organism. Using that term, he explains the characteristics of living things which can not be grasped by mechanical view. Stahl reports that there is a special movement that takes place within the body and calls it tonic motion(motus tonicus). This is a purposive movement that occurs in the human body to preserve life, which can never be explained by mechanism alone. According to Stahl, living things can not be identified with the mixed things. For they cannot be fully reduced to the material mixtures which constitute them. Stahl, therefore, suggests a cause different from mechanism as the principle of life. That is the ‘soul’(anima). According to Stahl, living bodies, combined with the soul, can never be same as simple physical bodies. Living body is an organism. At this time, the meaning of the ‘instrument’ is strongly alive in the concept of organism. Living body is a kind of instrument. In other words, it is a tool of the soul. In this way, Stahl resurrects the concept of life. The concept of organism implies itself the antinomy between mechanism and teleology of life. He is therefore the most important figure after Descartes, who raised the problem of the essence of life, which would be seriously discussed later in German philosophy.
