Abstract

This thesis deals with the themes of critical acceptance of mechanism and reconciliation between mechanism and Aristotle in Leibniz's early philosophical works. In this process, we can see how the views on the re-introduction of the substantial form, the theory of the phenomenon of body, and the concept of the corporeal substance began to be formed in the early period. Young Leibniz points out that the mechanistic concept of body with extension as its nature is indistinguishable from matter, and criticizes that such body concept does not include the cause of magnitude, figure, motion. And he argues that the cause must be found in the mind, which is an incorporeal being. On the other hand, he agrees that the mechanistic philosophy sees the cause of motion as external to the body, and this is consistent with Aristotle's general principle of motion. Based on this common principle, Leibniz argues that a reconciliation of mechanism and Aristotle's philosophy is not only possible but necessary. The reconciliation explains the connection between the main concepts of the two philosophies. In the process, Leibniz sets matter and form as the principles of rest and motion, and recognizes the constitutive requirements for the body to be a substance through the hylemorphic composition of the body. In the end, Leibniz defines the substance of the body as the union with the mind, which is a substantial form that can provide the principle of motion.
