이 논문은 유럽에서 자연과 생명에 대한 실증적 연구가 시작된 데카르트 시기로부터 19세기에 이르기까지의 근대적 생명인식에 나타나는 기계의 메타포와 그 의미를 고찰한다. 데카르트 시대의 신체기계가 영혼이나 생식의 문제를 해결하지 못한 불완전한 기계였다면, 19세기 물리화학의 성과들에 힘입어 등장한 실험생리학은 자연을 실험실 안에 도입시킴으로써 생명기계의 영혼과 기계제조 문제를 해결하고자 했다. 생명과 기계의 관계에 대한 고찰은 생명의 본질과 기계의 원리 사이의 상호 연관성 내지 접점을 이해하는 문제를 넘어서, 자연과 인공, 인간과 기계, 지식과 기술 사이의 관계 문제로 이어진다. 최근 수십 년간 학자들은 이들 사이의 엄격한 경계의 해체를 목도했고, 자연은 더 이상 인간행위의 결과와 무관한 양상이 아니게 되었다. 나아가 오늘날 기계는 생명에 대한 메타포를 넘어서 융합을 이루는 단계에 접어들었고, 결국 자연은 인간의 인식과 무관하게 인공물과 협력하는 존재가 되었다.
Abstract
This paper investigates the metaphors and meanings of machine presented in the modern recognition on life since Descartes to the 19th century. Machine in the age of Descartes had been an imperfect one which was unable to answer the questions on body-machine, soul, or generation; Encouraged by the success of physical and chemical sciences, 19th century experimental physiologists tried to introduce nature into laboratory in order to solve the questions of soul and machine as well as machine production. Studies on the relationship between the life and machine not only for the proper understanding of the life or the relationship between the life and machine, but also put significant light on the understanding the relationship between the natural and artificial, man and machine, knowledge and technology. For decades, scholars noticed the demise of the demarcation between these pairs, and now, nature is not considered something beyond human agent. Furthermore, machine proceeds to the melted into the life and come to be united rather than mere metaphor, and finally nature becomes a being cooperated with artifacts rather than with human recognition.
