Abstract
While biology has a long tradition as an autonomous science, its development in the second half of 20th century seems to support the Carnap-Oppenheim-Putnamian view on the hierarchical structure of science which implies the reducibility of the biological to the physical. Is the theories of biology reducible to those of physical science? This article analyses this question in three parts: 1) Investigation of the vitalism-mechanism debate in 19th century and its settlement. 2) Conceptual analysis of teleological, mechanical, and organicist view of the living world. 3) Ernst Mayr's ‘ultimate causation’ is compared with Daniel Dennett's notions of ‘skyhook versus crane’. The organicist perspective seems to give the most comprehensive view on the biological world, even if the mechanist view brings high efficiency to some research field. Further, the physico-chemical reductionist approach fails to encompass the evolutionary aspect of species and populations which is essential for biological thinking.
