고백자 막시무스의 실천(Praktikê)과 신(神) – 인(人) 관계 이해

개신교인들은 구원과 관련하여 “오직 은혜로 말미암은 구원”과 같은 교리를 중시한다. 그런데 이러한 개념들을 피상적으로만 이해하는 경우 실천의 중요성을 긍정하는 데 어려움을 겪을 수 있다. 이를 테면 위의 개념들은 ‘신앙 실천이 구원에 필수 불가결한 것이 아니라는 말인가?’하는 의문을 가지게 하거나, 더 나아가 자신의 신앙 실천의 노력이 펠라기우스적인 공로로 기울어질 우려가 있는 것은 아닌지 걱정하게 한다. 그리고 이러한 우려들은 무엇보다도 그들의 신앙 생활에서 영적 실천을 위한 노력에 적극적으로 임하는 것을 망설이게 하는 하나의 요소로 작용하고 있다. 이런 개신교인들에게 칼케돈 위격적 연합의 틀 안에서 실천과 신인 협력 관계를 설명하는 막시무스의 실천과 신인 관계에 관한 사상이 도움이 될 것이라고 본다. 막시무스는 실천이란 하나님의 은혜에 올바르게 응답하는 것이라고 말한다. 그리고 이러한 실천은 사람이 하나님과 상호 교통하는 관계를 이루며 살기 위해 꼭 필요한 것이라고 말한다. 나아가 실천은 사람이 창조 세계 속에서 하나님이 맡기신 사명을 감당하는데 필수적인 것이다. 사람에게 맡겨진 사명이란 창조 세계 속에서 모든 피조물들을 연합하게 하고 그것을 하나님에게로 이끌어가는 것이다. 이 역할을 수행하는 데 인간의 실천이 매우 중요하다. 이 사상들이 개신교인들의 실천에 대한 이해를 넓혀줄 것이다.
Abstract
Many Protestants feel a certain ambiguity concerning the legitimacy of spiritual practices. That is, Protestant Christians, who are familiar with “sola gratia,” feel a bit of uncertainty in the understanding of practice and thus may have such a question that: If our salvation solely depends on grace, in what way are our spiritual practices essential? Some may even worry that their spiritual practices might be regarded as merit in a Pelagian sense. Such ambiguity could be a matter that leads them to be less active with respect to spiritual practices. I argue, in this paper, that if they refer to the theology of Maximus the Confessor, especially his teaching of the Divine-human relationship and the role of praktikê in it, it will help them to overcome such ambiguity and to acquire a new legitimacy of spiritual practices regarding it as a constitutive element of one’s spiritual life.
