초록

구원론적 측면에서 매력적인 연구 주제인 신격화(θεοποίησις 혹은 θέωσις)는 이신론(deism) 혹은 자연 종교(natural religion)에 대응해야 하는 현대 신학 에서 “분수령인 쟁점”이라 할 수 있는 “하나님의 행위”(act of God)에 대한 숙고와 깊은 관련이 있다. 신격화 논의에서 하나님의 본성과 그분의 행위의 구분 및 관계성을 어떻게 파악할 것인지의 질문이 피조물인 인간이 어떻게 하나님께 참여하며 하나님을 닮아갈 수 있는지의 질문을 앞선다. 그러나 신격화의 존재론에 대한 개혁주의 신학자들의 비판은 여전하다. 대표적으로 브루스 L. 맥코맥(Bruce L. McCormack)은 신격화의 존재론이 하나님을 닮음과 하나님께 참여함을 강조하면서 하나님과 피조물 사이의 존재론 적 차이를 희석한다고 비판한다. 이 존재론은 창조물과 피조물 사이의 존재론적 구분을 분명하게 유지하는 개혁주의 전통에 설득력이 없다는 것이 맥코맥의 주장이다. 본 논문은 ‘신격화 논의에서 하나님의 본성과 행위의 관계성이 어떻게 이해되는가?'라는 질문에 답하며 신격화의 존재론에 대한 비판을 재고해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 본고는 하나님의 본성과 행위의 관계성에 대한 니사의 그레고리우스(Gregory of Nyssa, 335/40-394 이후), 아우구스티누스(Augustine of Hippo, 354-430), 그리고 그레고리우스 팔라마스(Gregory Palamas, 1296-1357/ 1359)의 이해를 탐구한다. 이로써, 본고는 신격화의 존재론이 하나님 본성의 초월성에 대한 양보 없이 하나님 그분께서 시간의 경륜 안에 행위 혹은 에네르게이아(ἐνέργεια 혹은 operatio)를 통해 현존하심과, 하나님의 에네르게이아가 '위격 안에'(ἐνυπόστατος) 있으므로 참여를 위해 본성의 혼합 없이 위격적으로 (위격에서 위격으로) 전달됨을 강조함을 보이고자 한다.

Abstract

Deification(θεοποίησις) or theosis(θέωσις), as a fascinating subject in soteriological terms, is deeply connected to the thoughts on "act of God", which is a "watershed issue" in contemporary theology in response to deism or natural religion. In the discussion of deification, the question of how to distinguish and relate God's nature and activity precedes the question of how human beings, as creatures, can participate in and become like God. The ontology of deification, however, has been criticized by Reformed theologians. Bruce L. McCormack, in particular, criticizes it for diluting the ontological distinction between God and His creatures as it emphasizes likeness to and participation in God. McCormack argues that the ontology is unconvincing in the Reformed tradition, which ensures the ontological distinction between God the Creator and His creatures. This paper seeks to answer the question, "How is the relation between God's nature and His activity understood in the discussions of deification?" for reconsidering the critique of the ontology. To do so, this paper explores the thoughts of Gregory of Nyssa (after 335/40-394), Augustine of Hippo (354-430), and Gregory Palamas (1296-1357/1359) about the relationship between God's nature and activity. In doing so, it is revealed that the ontology of deification emphasizes that God Himself is present in time through His activity or energia (ἐνέργεια or operatio) without a lack of awareness about the transcendence of God's nature, and that His energia is "in a hypostasis" (ἐνυπόστατος) and thus communicated hypostatically - from a hypostasis to a hypostasis - for participation without any confusion of natures.
