빌립보 교회를 위한 바울의 리더십 승계 전략 ― 초기 그리스도교회와 사회 정치적 상황을 중심으로

초록

본 논문의 목적은 빌립보 교회의 사회 정치적 상황을 사회 과학적 전망에서 재구성하고, 바울이 빌립보서를 저술한 목적과 빌립보 교회의 상황을 수습하기 위하여 동역자들을 어떻게 세우고자 했는지를 고찰하려는것이다. 빌립보 교회는 주로 루디아와 같은 하나님 경외자 출신을 포함한 이방인 그리스도인들로 구성되었다. 바울과 함께 빌립보 교회를 설립한 루디아 이후에 교회 내의 주요 리더십은 가정 교회의 지도자였던 유오디아와 순두게 등의 여성 리더들이 주도하였다. 루디아가 초기에 가졌던 리더십 이후 유오디아와 순두게의 리더십들이 서로 갈등 관계에 직면한 소식을 듣자 바울은 ‘카리스마적 교회’보다 더 안정적인 ‘직무적 교회’ 로의 전환을 위해 빌립보서를 기록하였던 것으로 보인다. 왜냐하면 빌립보 교회는 교회 내의 리더십들 간 갈등으로 인하여 불안정한 상태였기에 바울은 자신의 중재에 의해 교회의 대표자였던 에바브로디도의 리더십에 권위를 더 강화하여 복귀시킨 후 빌립보 교회의 대표 동역자로서 교회를 직무적 교회로 전환하기를 희망하였기 때문이다. 이와 아울러 바울이 디모데를 빌립보 교회로 파송하지 않고 자신의 곁에 두고자 했던 것은 여러 정황상 옥중에서 자신의 임박한 죽음의 가능성도 배제할 수 없었기에이를 대비한 자신의 리더십 승계가 긴요했던 것으로 볼 수 있다.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the socio-political context of the Philippian church from a social scientific perspective so that it can better examine the purpose of Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians and how Paul empowers his coworkers in order to deal with the conflict within the church. Gentile Christians, including God-fearing gentiles like Lydia, constitute the better part of the Philippian church. After Lydia co-established the Philippian church with Paul, women leaders such as Euodia and Syntyche played the main leadership roles within the church. However, when Paul heard about the conflict between women leaders, he wrote the letter to the Philippian church for transforming the church from a ‘charisma-oriented’ church to a ‘office-oriented’ church (Max Weber). For this purpose, he reinforced the leadership of Epaphroditus and sent him to the church as a mediator. In this process, since Paul anticipated the possibility of his death in the prison, he did not send Timothy and placed Timothy near him for the succession of his leadership.
