Abstract
This study is inspired by a question about Paul’s mention of two women, Euodia and Syntyche, in the letter to Philippi. It is not often that Paul uses someone’s name, particularly to criticize them. Traditionally, biblical scholars have viewed these women as disruptive to the Philippian community, a church that enthusiastically supported Paul’s mission. However, given that these women were worth named in the letter, that is to say, they were well-known and devoted in the church, one cannot help questioning if these women were really troublesome people or, rather, whether they were powerful people in the church that Paul considered equals in leadership? The significance of the women becomes more remarkable when we consider that women managed most of the household in the ancient world, and that the Christian community started in the form of a house church. This paper interprets Phil 4:2-3 not just on its own but in the whole context of the epistle, considering the historical situation of women in the Greco-Roman world and Paul’s rhetorical strategies to deal with issues in the faith community. As a result, this examination attempts to reevaluate the contribution of of Euodia and Syntyche in the formation of nascent Christianity.
