본 논문은 아나뱁티스트들의 교회 직제론은 종교개혁운동의 만인사제론을 실질적으로 구현한 역사적 평화교회의 근간이며 아나뱁티즘의 특성과 성격을 담보해 내는 주요 표지라는 점을 역사-신학적 관점에서 논구한다. 16세기 유럽의 종교개혁운동의 무대 위에 등장한 아나뱁티스트들은 한편으로 로마 가톨릭의 성직자 중심 체제를 거부하고 신자들의 자유로운 성서 연구와 공동체 훈련을 통한 지상에서의 사도적 교회의 복원을 지향하였고, 다른 한편으로 제도권 종교개혁자들이 기성 사회 질서와 연합 속에서 교회의 조직과 제도를 설계하였던 방식과는 달리 세상 제도와 분리를 통한 자신들만의 독특한 신앙 공동체를 구축해 나갔다. 교회 직제의 구성과 구조 형태는 교회의 본질과 사역의 성격을 규정할 뿐만 아니라 교회의 주요 의사를 결정하는 근간이다. 기독교 역사를 통해 등장한 교회 정치 형태는 크게 세 부류로 구분해 볼 수 있다. 하나는 중앙 집권적 체제이다. 로마 가톨릭, 동방 정교회, 성공회, 구세군 등이 ― 이들 사이에는 역사, 전통, 의사 결정 방식의 측면에서 많은 차이들이 존재한다 ― 이 제도를 채택하고 있다. 또 하나는 회중 중심 체제이다. 회중교회, 침례교파 등이 이 틀을 유지하고 있다. 마지막으로 장로회 체제를 들 수 있다. 교회 회중을 대표하는 장로들과 목사가 당회를 구성하여 교회를 운영하는 방식이다. 유럽의 개혁교회, 장로교회 등이 이 제도를 채택하고 있다. 아나뱁티스트들의 교회 정치 형태는 위의 세 범주들 중 어느 하나에 명확하게 귀속된다고 볼 수 없는 그들만의 역사성, 특수성, 고유성을 발전시켜 왔다. 이들이 고안하고 발전시켜 온 교회 직제론은 아나뱁티스트들의 비전과 직결되어 있으며 교회 내부 구성원들의 신앙 양태뿐만 아니라 세상과의 소통 방식을 규정하는 규범으로 작용한다. 이 글은 제도권 종교개혁 그룹과 비교해 볼 때 아나뱁티즘의 급진성은 무엇이며, 그것이 아나뱁티스트들의 정체성을 형성하는 데 얼마만큼 중요성을 지니고 있는지를 분석할 것이다. 또한 아나뱁티스트들의 교회 직제론을 그들이 채택하였던 신앙고백 문서들을 중심으로 살펴보면서 그것이 현대 교회에 주는 교훈과 특히 오늘날 기성 교회론의 담론과 어떻게 친화성을 갖는지를 논의해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
This article examines from the historical-theological perspective the Anabaptists’ church order theology. This theology is a system that practically embodies the doctrine of all priests of the Reformation movement, and that it is a major sign that guarantees the nature and characteristics of Anabaptism. The Anabaptists rejected the clergy-centered system of the Roman Catholic Church, while they aimed for the restoration of the apostolic church on earth through Bible study and community training among believers. They desired to build their own unique community of faith through separation from the government system, unlike the way the magisterial reformers designed the organization and system of the church from within the established social order. The composition and structural form of the church organization not only determines the nature and direction of the church’s ministry, but also determines the main decisions of the church. The forms of church governance that emerged throughout the history of Christianity can be divided into three broad categories: Centralized system, Congregational system, Presbytery system. Anabaptists’ church polity has developed their own historicity, specificity, and uniqueness that cannot be said to be clearly attributed to any of the three categories above. The Church order theory the Anabaptists have devised and developed is directly related to their vision, and it works as a norm that defines not only the religious patterns of members of the church but also the way of communicating with the world. This article will analyze what the radical element of Anabaptism is and how important it is in shaping the identity of Anabaptists compared to the magisterial Reformation group. In addition, by examining the confessions of faith the Anabaptists adopted, I would like to discuss the lessons they give to the modern church and how they have an affinity with the discourse of the established church today.
