이 논문에서는 16세기 훌드리히 츠빙글리의 종교개혁과 재세례파의교회와 국가에 대한 관계성을 당시 이들의 입장과 상황성에 비추어 고찰하고자 한다. 이 논문은 내용과 방법적으로 크게 두 가지로 구분되는데 첫째로 츠빙글리와 재세례파에 대한 이해이며 둘째로 개혁전통의 현대적 재적용이다. 첫 부분은 세 가지 방향에서 정리될 수 있겠는데 첫째로 츠빙글리 종교개혁과 재세례파 태동의 역사적 정황을 살펴보며, 둘째로 유아세례 논쟁을 둘러싼 교회와 시민공동체의 의미를 성찰하고, 셋째로 교회와 국가의 관계성에 대한 주류 츠빙글리파와 비주류 재세례파의 입장을 고찰하고자 한다. 이를 위해서 이 주제에 직간접적으로 관련된 츠빙글리와 재세례파의 대표적 글들을 찾아볼 것이다. 이러한 개혁주의전통의 근거 위에서 교회와 국가의 건강한 관계 유지를 지향하며 칼 바르트의 바르멘 선언을 비롯하여 현대적 재해석의 사례들과 오늘날의상황에 접목하는 내용을 성찰할 것이다. 재세례파의 초기 지도자들은 본래 츠빙글리와 함께 했던 제자이자 동료였으나 그의 개혁의 속도와 방법이 온건하다고 보며 더 급진적이고속도감 있는 개혁을 원하였다. 이들의 국가와 사회에 대한 과격한 분리현상은 취리히시 당국의 법규를 위반하는 것으로 이어지게 되었고 결국 이들은 공권력에 의하여 처형된 것이었다. 츠빙글리가 독선적인 진리를 주장하면서 재세례파를 비관용적으로 대한 것은 결코 아니었다는 뜻이다. 그러나 츠빙글리 주류파의 진리를 향한 열정은 남용되거나왜곡될 수 있는 한계도 지녔다. 이후 재세례파는 다양한 방법으로 발전되었기 때문에 일반화해서 말하기 어려운 점이 있다. 츠빙글리의 진리를 향한 열정과 교회의 개혁을 통한 사회개혁을 온전히 성찰하기 위해서는 재세례파와 그 관계성에 대한 이해가 필수 불가결하다. 평화적, 생태 친화적 생활 양식을 이어 온 재세례파와의 상호 교정과 협력은 갈등과 파괴가 증폭되는 21세기에 더욱 필요하겠다.
Abstract
This article looks at the relationship between Zwingli's Reformation and Anabaptists in the 16th century in light of their respective positions and circumstances toward the church and the state. In terms of content and methodology, this paper is largely divided into two categories: first, an understanding of Zwingli and the Anabaptists, and second, a modern application of the reformed tradition. The first part can be organized in three directions. First, it examines the historical context of the Zwingli Reformation and the birth of the Anabaptists, second, it attempts to examine the positions of mainstream Zwingli and non-mainstream Anabaptists on the issue of infant baptism, and third, it elaborates the relationship between church and state. Methodologically, we will look at essential materials of Zwingli, representative documents of the Anabaptists and responses from Zwingli. Finally, we aim to maintain a healthy relationship between the church and the state. We will reflect on the content grafted to the Barmen confession by Karl Barth and its application to the current context. The Anabaptist leaders were originally colleagues and disciples of Zwingli, but seeing that the pace and method of his reform was moderate, they wanted more radical, speedy and responsive reform. Their radical separation of the state, Church and society led to the violation of the laws and regulations of the Zurich city authorities, and they were ultimately executed by public authority. Zwingli's assertion of self-righteous truths was by no means intolerant of the Anabaptists. However, the Zwingli mainstream's passion for truth has limitations that can be abused or distorted. It is difficult to generalize now about Anabaptists since they developed in various ways since that time. But in order to reflect on Zwingli's passion for truth and social reform through church reform, an understanding of Anabaptists and their relationship is indispensable. Mutual understanding and cooperation with the Anabaptists, who have continued a peaceful and eco-friendly way of life, will be more necessary in the twenty-first century where conflict and ecological destruction has grown.
