혼합사례분석안을 통한 교차사례분석: 피지⋅바누아투⋅사모아 의회정치의 안정성 결정인자탐색

혼합체계분석안의 문제점을 일부 보정한 혼합사례분석안(Mixed Cases Design)을 피지, 바누아투, 사모아 등 3개 남태평양 도서국가에 있어서 의회정치의 안정성을 결정하는 인자를 도출하기 위한 교차사례적 비교분석에 적용한 결과, 아래와 같은 이론적⋅방법론적 효용성을 탐지할 수 있었다. 첫째, 종속변인의 특정한 변이양상을 확보할 필요가 없기 때문에 교차사례적 비교척도의 등가성이 확보되는 조건 하에서는 비교사례의 수를 증대시킴으로써 “과소사례”의 문제를 이완시킬 수 있다. ② 최대유사체계분석안을 적용했을 경우에 비해 독립변인의 수가 축소됨으로써 “과다변인”의 문제를 상당 부분해결할 수 있다. ③ 작동변인의 분석수준을 통일함으로써 교차수준적 인과경로를 형성하는 상세연계(micromediation)에 관한 선험적 가정에 대한 의존도를 낮출 수 있다.
Abstract
The application of the Mixed Cases Design (MCD), a revised version of the conventional Mixed Systems Approach, to a cross cases analysis of the parliamentary stability in Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa shows the methodological advantages of the strategy. The MCD may provide a partial solution to the “small-N” problem,since it does not require those cases with specific attributes -mutual similarities or differences－of the dependent variable if the cross- cases measurement validity of comparison yardsticks are properly secured. It may also substantially alleviate the “many variables” problem when compared to the application of the Most Different Systems Design as the present cross cases analysis of the three South Pacific nations demonstrates. Finally,the MCD does not require a priori assumptions on the specific micromediation of the cross-level causal linkage by using operating variables measured at the same level.
