Abstract

This study explores the lived experiences of stay-at-home mothers in their 40s in Region J, focusing on how they practice intensive mothering and navigate gendered structural inequalities. Growing up amid rapid industrialization and neoliberal policies, the participants chose stay-at-home motherhood after marriage—less as a nod to tradition and more as a strategic response to economic and gendered constraints in their local contexts. Rather than simply accepting traditional gender roles, their choices reflect active strategies to cope with unequal domestic labor and limited job opportunities. Based on in-depth interviews with five married women, this qualitative study examines how they internalize and enact the ideals of the “perfect mother” while interpreting their unpaid labor as a rational contribution to the family through the notion of “fair division.” However, such rationalization often reinforces gendered divisions of labor and sustains social norms regulating femininity and motherhood. While striving to instill egalitarian gender values in their children, these women continue to bear the primary burden of care work. Stay-at-home motherhood emerges not as a purely individual choice, but as a gendered practice shaped by broader forces—class, region, and cultural expectations. This study sheds light on how women actively negotiate these forces while managing family life and maternal identity in contemporary Korea.
