Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the literary function of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil as it appears in the narrative structure of Genesis 2:4b–3:24, and, based on this analysis, to explore its theological significance. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil, along with the various expressions referring to the tree and its fruit, appears repeatedly throughout the entire passage. This motif recurs and ties together various narrative units, thereby reinforcing the structural unity of the narrative. It is also closely connected to multiple theological themes. From the introductory stage (Gen 2:4b–25), the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is located at the center of the garden, serving as a central axis of spatial order. It also functions as a boundary that must not be crossed by humans, emphasized through God’s prohibition and the warning of death. As a narrative element that introduces conflict, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil operates as a key literary device that drives the development of the entire story. In the Garden of Eden, the tree is situated at the spatial center, and the question of obedience to God's command is symbolized through movement toward or away from this central space. When the man and the woman eat from the tree, they are expelled beyond the outer boundary of the garden. This marks a theological turning point that signifies a rupture from the space of God's presence—that is, a transformation in the relationship between God and humanity.
