Abstract

The reign of Amaziah is recorded in 2 Kings 14:1–20 and its parallel text in 2 Chronicles 25:1–28. The Chronicler made changes to the account of Amaziah in 2 Kings, which served as his source text(Vorlage). While the Chronicler faithfully followed the account of Amaziah in 2 Kings in some parts, he deleted or altered certain sections and added unique material (Sondergut) of Chronicles in others. The following are the intentions of the Chronicler revealed through a comparison of the accounts of Amaziah in Kings and Chronicles. First, like other parts of Chronicles, the Chronicler emphasized causality and retributive justice. To help readers better understand the sequence of events in the source text of Kings, the author added unique records of Chronicles that were not recorded in Kings or modified the source text of Kings. Second, while recording the account of Amaziah using the Book of Kings as a source, the Chronicler wrote in a way that ensures consistency and natural continuity between the remote context and the immediate context within Chronicles. Third, to emphasize Amaziah’s foolish sin, the Chronicler carefully altered and added words from the source text of the Book of Kings. Fourth, the Chronicler defended the legitimacy of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, established according to the Davidic Covenant, by deleting portions of the source text of the Books of Kings and adding his own unique records.
