Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the literary and theological implications of Psalm 119 by quantitatively analyzing the usage patterns of its Hebrew verb conjugations and personal pronouns at two levels: macro-structure and micro-function. To this end, the study examines the overall distribution of all verbs (343 occurrences) and first/second-person expressions (macro-analysis), alongside the specific usages of major verb stems (micro-analysis). The results confirm that these grammatical devices play a decisive role in shaping the psalm's core message. Notably, the high frequency and balance of first and second-person expressions grammatically demonstrate that Psalm 119 is not merely an abstract hymn to the Law but an intensely personal confession of faith in which the poet walks personally with God, experiencing and wrestling with the Word. In the verb analysis, the overwhelming use of the simple active Qal stem (218 occurrences) shows that the poet’s experiences and resolutions are described factually and without embellishment. Furthermore, the high frequency of the Piel (59 instances) and Hiphil (43 instances) stems reveals the interplay between an ‘ardent practical devotion’ to the law and the ‘dynamics of faith’ dependent on God’s grace. Conversely, the scarcity of passive stems (Niphal, Pual) paradoxically highlights the poet’s active struggle of faith. In conclusion, the patterns of verb and person usage in Psalm 119 are not mere formulaic repetitions but sophisticated literary devices. The poet flexibly employs various verb stems to first establish an existential reality by factually describing personal experiences (Qal), then express the intensity of relational struggle and devotion upon that foundation (Piel), and ultimately, portray in three dimensions the journey of faith growing under God's initiative (Hiphil). This study proposes that such a quantitative approach to the flexible use of micro-grammatical elements can offer a new avenue for exploring the theological depth of Psalm 119.
