Abstract
This article aims to investigate the position of Genesis 38 by means of concentric structure. The chapter is a small unit, but it is also designed in its literary context within the larger perspective. A number of historico-critical commentators and literary critics have considered this story as an interruption or as a chapter necessary to the surrounding narratives so called the Joseph story. My viewpoint on this study is more in line with the literary defences of the apparent discontinuities between chapter 38 and the chapters around it as being part of the com- municative strategies of a wider narrative, I have shown the placement of Genesis 38 in its literary context on different scales; its role as part of the literary unit of Genesis 37-39, Genesis 37-50, Genesis 12-50 and up to forming part of the whole Genesis 1-50. The reason that I have dealt with chapter 38 within these contextual frames is that each unit interacts with other. This re- search has focused on the linguistic and thematic connections between Genesis 38 and the surrounding narratives. In addition, it suggests a way of understanding such serial narratives. It is clear that Genesis 38 should not be isolated from other narratives. Such arguments are linked to the final form of the artificial work. In consequence, Genesis 38 reflects mirror in the mirror or mise-en-abyme within the text as a concentric pattern in a literary sense.
