Abstract

This study analyzes the macroeconomic effects of fiscal austerity, considering fiscal austerity measures and the degree of aging. To this end, I use data for 16 advanced economies and KBO-Local projections. The results reveal that the effects of fiscal austerity are heterogeneous across the measures and the degrees of aging. Increasing the tax burden reduces GDP to a greater extent than spending cuts, but improves the fiscal balance more than spending cuts. Furthermore, the effects of fiscal austerity depend on the degree of aging. Aging tends to reduce the adverse effects of fiscal austerity. In addition, indirect tax shows a larger short-term negative effects on GDP than direct tax, and government consumption and investment shows a large GDP reduction than transfer payments. In addition, regardless of the instruments, aging mitigates those negative effects. All fiscal instruments excluding transfer payments are effective in improving the fiscal balances in the short term.
