Abstract
As interest in social value creation increases in a business area, for-profit companies in Korea are also actively pursuing social values. However, previous research related to social value has been conducted mainly in social economy organizations, non-profit organizations, or government agencies. In particular, little is known about how corporate social value pursuit affects employees’ experiences and behaviors, who are key stakeholder of the organization, both inside and outside the workplace. To fill the research gaps, this study draws on meaning of work theory and aims to investigate the effect of large companies’ pursuit of social and economic value on employees’ work performance and civic engagement via meaning of work. As a result of collecting and analyzing data from 360 employees and their direct supervisors in Korean conglomerates, it was found that the positive impact of pursuit of social value on employees' meaning of work was stronger than that of economic value. In addition, meaning of work has a positive effect on not only job performance but also on civic engagement, and the positive effect of social value pursuit on job performance and civic engagement through meaning of work is also stronger than economic value. Based on these results, the implications for promoting social value creation of large companies were discussed.
