Abstract
According to the Nihon Shoki, in 543, King Seong of Baekje presented "Funan's goods and two slaves" to the Kingdom of Wa. This entry mentions three countries: Baekje, Wa, and Funan, and it has been frequently discussed, especially in the study of diplomacy and exchange history. However, to the best of the author's knowledge, the issue of why Baekje chose to send Funan's goods to Japan specifically in 543, rather than to other countries or regions, has hardly been explored. This paper, starting from this account, will argue that from the late 5th century to the early 6th century, Funan proposed "Mandala-type international order" to approach the Southern Dynasties, and actively promoted its role as a hub for the transmission of Southern Buddhism. As a result, Funan came to occupy an important position in the Buddhist culture of the Southern Dynasties, and Baekje, fully aware of this fact, tried to transmit the role of Funan in Southern Buddhism, as well as Funan’s culture to the Kingdom of Wa.
