Abstract

This study examines the historical development of epitaph inscriptions (muzhiming, 墓誌銘) unearthed from ancient China and investigates the process of their formal transformation. Far from being mere funerary records, muzhiming evolved into a sophisticated cultural device with specific formats, structures, literary styles, and production systems, thereby reflecting the social values and institutional frameworks of their time. An analysis of the concept and origin of muzhiming reveals that the inscribed roof tiles (瓦文) and prison-brick inscriptions (刑徒磚銘) of the Qin–Han period functioned as early prototypes of tomb markers, while the Epitaph of Lady Ma Jiang, Wife of Jia Wuzhong (賈武仲妻馬姜墓記) from the Eastern Han period can be regarded as the earliest complete form of muzhiming. During the Wei–Jin and Northern–Southern Dynasties, the prohibition of erecting tomb stelae and changes in burial customs led to the spread of interred stone epitaphs. By the Sui and Tang dynasties, the combined structure of zhigai (cover) and zhishen (body), standardized size and format, fixed stylistic conventions, and a division of labor among the author, calligrapher, and engraver had become firmly institutionalized. The structure of muzhiming evolved beyond simple biographical recording to include moral evaluations of the deceased and poetic eulogies that reinforced its commemorative function. The authorship also expanded from state officials to private individuals, including members of the Hanlin Academy, relatives, and local notables, reflecting the social hierarchy and credibility of the text. Over time, muzhiming developed from a narrative record into a lyrical form of elegiac literature, establishing a literary model for later epitaph writing. Thus, ancient muzhiming can be understood not only as records of individual lives but also as comprehensive cultural products encompassing funerary practice, bureaucratic systems, literary conventions, and social order. By exploring the historical development and formal transformation of muzhiming, this study aims to provide a foundation for comparative research on the reception and adaptation of East Asian funerary culture, including epitaphs of the Three Kingdoms migrants.
