충주 칠금동 제철유적의 조성과 운영 주체의 변천에 관한 고찰

본고는 충주 칠금동 제철유적에서 나타나는 기술적 변화와 유적의 조성 및 운영 주체의 변천에 대해 밝히는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 규명하기 위해 충주지역의 고고학적 환경, 중원지역 전체 제련로의 형식 분류 및 변천 과정, 그리고 칠금동 제철유적 제련로의 기능적 특성과 운영 주체의 변화를 종합적으로 분석하여 기술의 변천과 운영 세력 변화의 원인과 동력을 추적하였다. 분석 결과 칠금동 제철유적은 크게 세 단계의 뚜렷한 변천 과정을 거쳤음이 확인되었다. 초기 재지 세력 주도기에는 재지세력의 주도로 유입된 제철전문집단이 그들이 보유한 제철 기술을 점토 지반이라는 열악한 지역 환경에 맞춰 독창적인 기초시설을 갖춘 ‘칠금동식 제련로’로 재창조하는 모습을 보였다. 4세기 전후 백제 개입기에는 지배 권력의 교체 속에서도 기존의 기술자 집단이 유지되면서 축적된 경험을 바탕으로 복잡했던 노의 구조를 점차 단순화시켜 더 적은 노력으로 높은 효율을 얻는 방향으로 기술을 발전시켰다. 5세기 이후 쇠퇴 및 전환기에는 삼국의 각축이라는 지정학적 격변 속에서 생산 기반이 붕괴하였다. 결론적으로 이러한 변천 과정은 칠금동 제철유적의 역사가 기술과 사회의 유기적 관계 속에서 이루어진 역동적인 적응과 변화의 과정이었음을 보여준다.
Abstract
This study aims to clarify the technological changes and the transition of the leading entities involved in the construction and operation of the Chilgum-dong iron production site in Chungju. To this end, it comprehensively analyzes the archaeological environment of the Chungju region, the typology and chronological changes of smelting furnaces across the broader Jungwon region, and the functional characteristics of the Chilgum-dong furnaces in relation to the shifts in their operating entities. thereby tracing the causes and driving forces behind these transformation. The analysis reveals that the Chilgeum-dong site underwent three distinct phases of transformation. During the initial phase, led by local indigenous powers, smelting principles introduced from abroad were creatively reconfigured into the unique ‘Chilgeum-dong style furnace’, which featured an original foundation structure designed to suit the local environment of humid clay soil. In the second phase, around the 4th century CE, Baekje’s intervention led to a political shift, yet the existing artisan groups remained. Their accumulated experience allowed for the gradual simplification of the furnace structure-not as a regression, but as an evolution toward greater efficiency with reduced labor. In the final phase of decline and transformation after the 5th century CE, the production base collapsed amidst geopolitical turmoil. In conclusion, this transformation demonstrates that the history of the Chilgeum-dong site was a dynamic process of adaptation and change, driven by the organic interplay between technology and sociopolitical structures.
