정전은 문학뿐만 아니라 문화 전반에 걸쳐 인류 역사에서 오랫동안 우리에게 친숙한 주제다. 정전에 해당한다고 여겨지는 문화 텍스트들은 고대부터 현재까지 동양과 서양에서 창작되고 전파되었다. 그런데 서구 근대 문명의 출현과 함께 정전은 우리가 직면해야 할 하나의 문제로 떠오르게 된다. 그 이유는 서구 근대 문명은 그리스와 로마 문명을 자체의 고유한 뿌리로 채택하면서 서구의 ‘외부’에 있는 모든 문명을 폄하하는, 이른바 서구중심적이고 근대중심적인 속성을 근본으로 해왔기 때문이다. 그러한 서구근대중심적 문명관에서 제국과 식민, 문명과 야만, 중심과 주변과 같은 이분법적 분리가 고착화되고 심화된 것은 주지의 사실이다. 정전은 그러한 이분법적 분리를 공고히 하는 하나의 기준으로 제시되었고, 따라서 정전 문제의 연구는 그러한 이분법적 분리의 비판과 극복을 위한 논의를 펼치는 것과 다르지 않았다. 딱히 정전 연구라는 이름을 붙이지 않아도 주로 20세기 이후에 펼쳐진 문학과 문화이론들의 많은 수가 정전 문제와 직간접적으로 연결되어있다는 사실 혹은 그렇게 볼 수 있다는 점은 정전의 문제가 그만큼 뿌리가 깊고 영향력이 크다는 점을 말해준다. 이 논문에서는 정전에 대해 주로 서양에서 연구해온 흐름들을 정리하고 그 공과를 평가하며, 그 평가 위에서 정전 연구에 대한 새로운 접근의 필요성과 그 방향을 제안하려는 목표를 추구한다. 첫 번째 목표를 위해서는 방대한 양의 논술을 필요로 하지만, 이 논문에서는 여러 항목들을 제시하고 간단한 논평을 하는 방식을 채택하고자 한다. 이는 정전 연구의 새로운 지평을 가늠하기 위해 서양의 정전 연구의 전체 계보를 우선 개괄하고 통찰하는 작업이 필요하기 때문이다. 두 번째 목표를 위해서는 연구와 교육 같은 실질적인 측면들을 비롯하여 정전 연구에 필요한 개념과 사유방식들의 논의가 들어간다. 마지막으로 정전을 정전으로 만들어주는 정전성을 어떻게 이해하고 받아들이며 운용해야 하는가 하는 문제를 정전성의 정치학이라는 차원에서 논의한다. 위와 같은 논의를 통해서 우리는 정전이 무엇이고 왜 문제이며 정전성이 어떻게 작동되어왔으며, 정전 연구와 관련된 서양의 지적 계보를 어떻게 파악할 수 있는지 이해할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 그 위에서 정전 연구를 위한 새로운 지평을 마련하기 위해 어떤 사고와 개념을 동원하는 것이 필요한지 추론해볼 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문은 이후 전개될 세부적인 연구들이 취해야 할 기본 토대와 방향을 정해준다는 의미를 지닌다.
Abstract
The term canon has long been familiar with us in the fields of literature as well as whole culture in the human history. The cultural texts that can be recognized as canon have been created and disseminated from the antiquity to the present in both the East and West. What matters is that now the canon arises as a problem to be faced along with the advent of the modern Western civilization. This is because the modern Western civilization has based itself on the modern West-centered thought through which it adopts the Greek and Roman civilizations as its own roots and thereby underestimates all civilizations outside it. It is not really new to point out that under such modern West-centered view of civilization the dichotomy between empire and colony, civilization and savageness, center and periphery, has been adhered and intensified. The canon has been suggested as a criterion to fix such dichotomy; therefore the canon studies must not be other than discussing the way of criticizing and overcoming that dichotomy. The issue of canon has a long historical background as we see that most of the literary and cultural theories since the 20th century have been related to the phenomenon of canon. This paper aims to classify the main trends of canon studies particularly in the West and evaluate their merits and demerits, and to suggest the necessity of new approach to canon studies. The first aim requires a huge amount of discourse but in this paper I adopt the way of suggesting some items of those trends and commenting them one by one. This way of approach may be appropriate insofar as in order to measure the new horizon of canon studies the work of introducing and discerning the whole genealogy of the canon studies in the West is firstly demanded. For the second aim I discuss such practical dimensions as research and education of canon which are strictly linked to examining the concepts and thoughts required for the canon studies. After all I discuss the politics of canonicity about how we can understand and operate the canonicity which creates and maintains a canon. This paper is expected to establish the fundamental basis and direction that the individual approaches of canon studies will take.
