이 글은 최장집 교수의 민주주의론을 프랑스의 정치철학자 에티엔 발리바르의 이론과 비교하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 보통 자유주의자인 최장집과 마르크스주의자인 발리바르 사이에는 거의 공통점이 존재하지 않을 것이라고 생각하지만, 우리가 보기에 양자 사이에는 여러 가지 공통점이 존재한다. 우리는 민주주의의 민주화, 민주주의의 봉기적 기원, 대의 민주주의의 중요성, 갈등에 대한 강조, 사회적 시민권에 대한 중시라는 5가지 측면에서 두 사람 사이에는 공통점이 있다고 생각한다. 반면 이러한 공통점에도 불구하고, 또는 바로 그러한 공통점 때문에 양자 사이에는 주목할 만한 차이점이 존재하며, 이러한 차이점은 민주주의에 대한 두 사람의 입장의 차이를 보여준다. 우리는 민주주의에 대한 민주화를 보는 관점의 차이, 민주주의에 고유한 배제, 이데올로기와 주체화, 갈등을 넘어선 극단적 폭력, 정당과 운동이라는 5가지 측면에서 양자 사이의 차이점을 살펴보려고 한다. 이러한 공통점과 차이점은 두 이론가 사이의 차이점을 좀더 정확히 이해하게 해주며, 한국 민주주의에 대한 또 다른 이해를 가능하게 해줄 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper we try to compare Choi Jangjib's theory of democracy with Etienne Balibar's political philosophy of democracy. It's usually thought that there are hardly any common features between the former who is a liberal theorist and the latter who is a well-known Marxist. But we believe that there are considerable common points between them: the idea of democratization of democracy, the insurrectional origin of democracy, the importance of representation in democracy, emphasis on the conflict in politics, and the stress on the political significance of social citizenship. But, in spite of this commonness, or because of that, there are also some remarkable differences between them which show their different conceptions of democracy. The following five features seem to us especially important: the difference in the conception of democratization of democracy, the exclusions which are proper to modern democracy, difference on the themes of the ideology and the subjectivation, extreme violences in politics, and the relation between the party and the mouvement. We think that these differences in commonness help to understand the difference between two theorists of democracy more precisely, and make possible to think the Korean democracy in another ways.
