Abstract
The aim of this paper is to, following Balibar's recent discussions in La Proposition de l'égaliberté and other texts, elucidate the antinomical structure of the apparently self-evident idea of democratic citizenship and think about conditions of historical combinations of citizenship and democracy. As is well shown in the usage of the ancient Greek term isonomia in Herodotus's The Histories, democracy is understood as a principle of anarchy. It is only by including this dangerous principle, which can lead to its own death, as its intrinsic moment that political community may avoid another death of its own, which Balibar calls a programmed death. Hence democratic citizenship exists only as a very unstable, conflictual, and conjunctural formation and thus has diverse historical figures. In modern times, it produced two figures of modernity. This paper examines the contents and limits of such modern figures of citizenship, and furthermore explores what should be thought about for a new invention of postmodern democratic citizenship.
