Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between changes in income inequality levels and crime rates by income groups. Using data from 1992 to 2016 in South Korea, the analysis focuses on crime rates—specifically robbery, violent crime, and theft—among the lower-and middle-income groups. A cointegration analysis was conducted using three indices to measure income inequality more precisely: the Gini coefficient (overall inequality), the P90/P50 ratio (inequality between upper and middle-income groups), and the S80/S20 ratio (inequality between upper and lower-income groups). The results indicate that, in general, an increase in income inequality is associated with a significant rise in crime rates among both the lower and middle classes. Furthermore, the worsening of income inequality between specific income groups was found to have a significant relationship with crime rate changes in other groups beyond the affected class. Based on these findings, policy implications and potential limitations were discussed.
