소득 불평등과 범죄율 간의 공적분 관계 분석

본 논문은 소득 불평등이 주요 범죄유형별 범죄율에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 1990년부터 2020년까지의 국내 시계열 자료를 활용하였으며, 소득 불평등의 지표로 소득5분위배율을 사용하였다. 소득 불평등 외에 범죄율에 영향을 미치는 통제변수로 국내총생산과 실업률을 활용하였다. 단위근 검정 결과, 변수들은 차분 안정적인 것으로 판명되었고 공적분 검정에서는 소득 불평등과 살인, 강도, 절도 및 폭력 범죄율 사이에 공적분 관계가 성립하는 것으로 나타났다. 공적분 관계식을 추정한 결과, 소득 불평등은 살인, 절도 및 폭력 범죄율에 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 소득 불평등이 1% 상승하면 살인, 절도, 폭력 범죄율은 각각 19.0%, 9.3%, 2.1% 증가하는 것으로 추정되었다. 본 논문의 이러한 분석 결과는 소득 불평등이 살인 범죄와 연관성이 높고, 재산범죄에 해당하는 절도 범죄율을 유의미하게 증가시킬 수 있음을 의미한다. 실증분석 결과, 소득 불평등은 국내총생산과 실업률보다 범죄율에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 범죄율을 설명하는 요인으로 소득 불평등이 중요한 변수라는 것을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between income inequality and crime rates of major crime types in Korea, which includes homicide crime, robbery crime, theft crime, and assault crime. Time series data from 1990 to 2020 are used, and income quintile ratio is adopted as a variable to represent income inequality. Cointegration tests show that there exist a stable relation between income inequality and crime rates of major crimes. Estimation result of the cointegrating equation reveals income inequality has a significant positive effect on crime rates of homicide, theft and assault crime. When income inequality rose by 1%, homicide, theft and assault crime rates increased by 19.0%, 9.3%, 2.1% respectively. Income inequality had greater effect on crime rates than macroeconomic variables such as real GDP and unemployment rate, which implies that income inequality is an important variable explaining crime rates in Korea.
