언어교육은 흔히 정치, 경제, 문화, 역사, 또는 이데올로기적 관계와는 무관한 것으로 여겨져 왔지만, 언어정책과 그 실제에 있어서는 해당 사회의 광범위한 상황맥락에 크게 영향받아온 것이 사실이다. 다시 말하자면, 언어교육은 지역적, 국가적, 그리고 세계적 관점에서 사회정치적, 경제적, 구조적 맥락과 떼어서 생각할 수 없다. 이는 언어 이데올로기를 언어에 관한 상상적 또는 상징적 표현이라고 할 때 특정 언어의 사용이나 언어적 변이를 일정한 정도 정당화 시켜준다. 이런 관점에서 볼 때, 역사적, 정치적, 구조적, 이데올로기적 맥락 속에 있는 영어교육도 특정 언어 이데올로기를 생산 또는 재생산해 내는 역할을 한다는 점을 지적하였다. 이 논문에서는 언어 이데올로기의 네 가지 특성을 이루는 지시성 (indexicality), 지배성 (dominance), 다양성 (multiplicity), 사회구조 (social structure) 이 영어교육에 끼친 영향을 모색해 보았다.
