Abstract

This paper critically reviews the colonial paradigm of English education in Korea, putting special focus on the issues of curriculum planning, research convention, and methodological approaches, while proposing Critical Applied Linguistics as an alternative approach. To support the arguments, this paper analyzes the changes in English curricula in the aspects of its objectives, curriculum designs, and methods. The key points of this paper's arguments are as follows: first, English education in Korea is strongly affected by the ideologies of neoliberal globalization, market-fundamentalism, and linguistic (English) imperialism; second, the theoretical foundation and the practice of English education relies highly on constructivism, functionalism, and instrumentalism, which have restricted English education in Korea within the limits of colonial practices. Finally, this paper emphasizes that Critical Applied Linguistics is urgently needed for overcoming the colonial legacy and suggests some methodological approaches for it.
