Abstract

A new concept of empire has come into being since the nd ofimperialism. A core of that concept lies in the deteritorization of empire.English, the language of empire is a medium in which empire isembodied.This paper undertakes to examine the way in which the mpire isdeteritorized and reteritorized through the medium of English. Inconjunction with the theory of the mpire of English, the paper wil touchupon what English education does with its emphasis upon "practicalnes".It also tries to explain how argument for English as a comon languagein Korea is related with the mphasis upon the practical English. As a resistance to the abuse of English, the paper suggested two things: 1) we must search for the weak points in the networking of empire. University education is one of them. 2) We must relocated English in the movement of the anti-globalization.
