A cross-cultural text analysis of argumentative writing: A theme perspective

본 연구는 동서양의 논설문을 논제 구조(thematic structure)와 논제 전개(thematic development) 패턴을 통해 기능-의미론적(functional-semantic) 관점에서 대조 분석하고 해석한 것이다. 조사 표본은 동일한 주제를 다루는 영어 신문사설이다. 표본으로는 동양에서는 한국의 사설을, 서양에서는 호주의 사설을 선정했다. 텍스트 분석에는 체계 기능 문법(systemic functional grammar)의 논제(theme) 분석 기법을 사용했다. 분석 결과, 한국의 글은 텍스트 구조에서 비형식적인(informal) 구어체 특색을 나타내면서 논제를 반복하며 발전시키는 논의 전개 패턴을 보였고, 호주의 글은 비교적 문어체(written) 특성을 띠면서 논제를 지그재그 방식으로 전개하며 논의를 발전시키는 경향을 나타냈다.
