초록

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the thematic structures of Chinese texts across different text types, in order to understand how differences in text types are reflected in the thematic structures. Using the concepts of ‘Theme, Rheme, and Thematic progression patterns’ from Systemic Functional Linguistics, this study compares and analyzes the thematic structures of newspaper articles and column texts in the field of science and technology. The texts analyzed are 10 newspaper articles and 10 column texts related to generative AI, published on Huanqiu.com between January and March 2025. The themes are categorized into three types based on their functional roles: topical themes, interpersonal themes, and textual themes. In terms of complexity, the themes are further classified into two categories: simple theme and multiple theme. The thematic progression patterns are categorized into four types: theme reiteration pattern, the linear theme pattern, multiple rheme pattern, the derived theme pattern. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, in both newspaper and column texts, the frequency of topical themes is highest among the simple themes, with a higher frequency of participants and circumstances within the topical themes. Second, in newspaper texts, the interpersonal themes occur more frequently before the topical themes, while in column texts, the textual themes occur more frequently before the topical themes. Third, in both newspaper and column texts, the ‘theme reiteration pattern’ occurs most frequently, indicating it is the most typical progression pattern. Additionally, multiple rheme pattern and derived theme pattern also appear frequently, which suggests that texts in the field of science and technology tend to describe or explain a single theme from various perspectives.
