Abstract

This study examines the theoretical structure and interrelationship of faith (信) and practice (行) in the two major schools of Chinese Buddhism: the Pure Land School and the Chan School. In Buddhist practice, faith refers to belief in ultimate truth, while practice signifies the practical discipline based on that faith. The Pure Land School pursues rebirth in the Western Pure Land through the practice of nianfo (reciting Amitābha Buddha”s name), grounded in absolute faith in Amitābha”s original vow power. In contrast, the Chan School aims to attain enlightenment in this very life through seated meditation (zazen) and introspection, based on unwavering trust in one”s intrinsic Buddha-nature. At first glance, the two schools differ significantly in their content of faith and modes of practice. However, in reality, faith and practice form a mutually dependent and reinforcing relationship in both traditions. This paper conducts an in-depth comparative analysis of the structural characteristics—namely, the “difficult faith, easy practice” (nanxin yixing) of the Pure Land School and the “easy faith, difficult practice” (yixin nanxing) of the Chan School—revealing a deeply complementary relationship between the two in both theory and practice. Based on this analysis, the study explores the possibility of developing an integrative practice model suitable for contemporary society by synthesizing the strengths of both traditions. It proposes a direction wherein each school retains its distinct characteristics while seeking a practical convergence of faith and practice. Such an integrative approach not only meets the diverse needs of modern practitioners but also offers new methods and directions for the propagation and application of Buddhism in today”s world.
